Welcome to our little space on the net! This blog is just about our family life, and began as a way to keep family and friends updated on what was going on with my pregnancy with our first son, Gage. We've since added Evie to our family, and I continue to blog about family life, car seats, spina bifida, and anything else that catches my attention.

Change of plan

Well, we're still at Children's. There was infection in the CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) and so Gage has to have 2 additional surgeries- one he just got back from, and another in 10 days or more. The surgery today was to remove the shunt that he just got Friday and to place an EVD or External Ventricular Drain. Its basically a tube that goes from the ventricles in his brain to a bag on the outside. He is on some heavy-duty antibiotics. They will test the CSF that comes out every day for infection, and when he has had 10 days of negative cultures, they will replace the shunt and then we should get to go home the next day. So we are hanging out here for now. We have to call the nurse to clamp off the drain every time we move him because the bag has to stay level with his head. We are tired and stressed, but we are glad this surgery is over with and are now just praying for negative cultures. We really appreciate your prayers for Gage. He is a trooper and handling all of this really well, but we will all be happier at home!

No matter how nice the hospital is, I know you would rather be at home. We are praying for all the things that we know you understand and we don't. I am thankful that you and Tony are edumacated! All that said, you are still a Mama and a Daddy and Gage is your gift from God to take care of. You both have shown how much you depend upon Him through all of this and you will be blessed. That is His promise....I love you very much and cannot wait to see him!
